Parade! [Feb. 8th, 2009|02:35 pm]

[mood | busy]
[music |Метель - ДДТ]

Took the train(s) to SF yesterday for the Lunar New Year Parade. I have to say, it was awesome...at least for the first hour and a half or so. After that, it became kinda...redundant? I dunno, it's cool to see all the local schools and such, but a completely white marching band from a random-ass high school in Nevada? Why are you in a Lunar New Year parade...?

The crowds were pretty horrible. We were literally squeezed into an area where no one could move, even if they wanted to leave. I was fine, I'm used to mosh pits, but there were some people who were really unprepared (or just plain stupid), like a mom who brought her claustrophobic kids (who started freaking the FUCK out) and then SHE freaked out and was yelling at everyone to move, and there was no place to go. Another lady complained that people were pushing her, and that everyone should stop being so rude (in a crowd of thousands of people) and then some crazy guy came up and was yelling at everyone to move so he could catch a bus (there was no bus). When people told him we couldn't move because there was a parade and the streets were blocked, his response was "I don't give a DAYUMN! MOVE!" but eventually he figured it out.

We got decently close to the front, despite everything, and I managed to get some good photos without getting my camera or camera case crushed. I'll post those at psytography starting today.

In conclusion, I like Caltrain much more than BART - it's not as loud, the route is more scenic, and the ticket systems are easier to use. Though BART does have better stops for going into the city.

Today will be a work day, with maybe some errand running in between. Depends on how motivated I am.

So after much deliberation, I bought it.

Lens testing photos, round one )

In short, lens kicks ass. Also, carpal tunnel both hands, so not so much on the computer lately, except for work.

Think I should upgrade Flickr to a pro account?

Beta FTW [Jul. 14th, 2008|05:28 pm]

[mood | sick]

I've long been a fan of Old Technology, so naturally I had a Betamax player that I'd kept around for years. However, when I finally got a hold of tapes for the damn thing, I found it wouldn't play back at all, it instead ate the tapes. So I put in a request at the local warehouse of awesome for them to hold a Beta player for me if they ever got one in. About two months later, I got a phone call saying that they received a tested WORKING player, so today, we brought it home.

These aren't my photos, because I'm currently sick and therefore being lazy.

The model number is Sony SL-8200 - apparently, the first and only Beta player ever made with two recording speeds, to allow for two hours of recording, as opposed to one, which was where Beta was losing to VHS. It was introduced in 1977, so not only is it 31 years old, but it's HUGE - we're talking massive. I'm guessing it weighs a good 50 pounds, and it's the size of a small child. It's awesome.

I did some net digging and found that it retailed for about $900 when it was introduced, and to buy the same model today is the same price, apparently - couldn't find this one on eBay, only from serious collectors. The downside is, while it plays anything that's L-500 speed and under, the newer speed B3, introduced only a year later, won't play back on it. I'm not sure what the standard is for home video, but I'm hoping I'll be able to get a hold of some tapes (things like Star Wars, etc.) that'll be playable.

And now, back to concept arting, and hoping I'll be well enough for work tomorrow.

Last Friday we were supposed to go to San Francisco to do photography. We had been planning it all week, then got up, and both decided "ehh" and stayed home. I found out yesterday that the train we would have been on collided with another train.

Thanks guardian angel person daemon thing, I owe ya one.

Also, photodump from the second day of road trippin'. These are from back when I still had no idea what my camera could do, so they're not to pretty, but oh well. 'tis all about the memories.

I think I've almost exceeded my Flickr upload amount for this month )

This past Friday the 13th, the fires in the Bay got worse, and the smoke blanketed the town. This is what it did to the sky.

I command you all to go watch Weezer's video for Pork and Beans, right now.

[music |24 - Jem]

Been busy lately, mostly because I found out Nathan is in town for the week and I started work this past Monday. But anyway-

Road Trip Photos, day one )

So this week has been a lot of fun, mostly because Nathan is here, which I found out on Sunday. Monday night Stefen, Andrew and I went over to where he was staying with friends and hung out, and last night we tried to get a big group over here (which mostly failed) and just hung out, played Rock Band, and watched the Meaning of Life (thank you, John Cleese, for existing), and talked about everything from Linux to Amsterdam. Also traded some music, and I got some really kickass stuff - mostly things that I've been looking for and was never able to find/songs I didn't know who the artist was. Good times.

Work is...good. Can't say much more than that, except we started on the cool stuff today, so basically the non-introductory things. Really really cool things. Mmmmmmmyep.

My goal is to do some character model packets for Lythium, and I talked to my drawing for animation teacher to get some feedback on my final (which is really shitty looking back at it :/), so I'm going to try to start on that once photos get edited and sorted out. Right now things are awesome because I don't have to worry about homework, but I have a feeling that class starts rather soon (June 21st, maybe) which will make me busy again, and that's no fun. Oh well.

GH2 time.

There are spots on some of these because I apparently have dust on my sensor, and don't have a blower to clean it. Also, I'm too lazy to spot heal them in PS, unless I'm making them a print or posting them on DA.

[mood | energetic]

I brought my new camera to Andrew Fest tonight, just to get a feel for it and mess around with some of the settings. So far, I'm in LOVE with it, even though I was trying to photograph in a dark room with flashing lights, so my camera was probably wondering why the hell the lights kept changing after it had measured the settings. That, and I was trying to get the right aperture and shutter speed but accidentally changed the ISO...oops. It'll take a little while to learn I guess. Oh well, time to procrastinate and post photos. Aww, damn, I just realized the ones hosted on Facebook died of compression...

Andrew Fest '08! )

And now, off to do more drawing for animation.

This weekend will be hell. Drawing for animation, sculpture, and 3D modeling are the big ones right now.

Here, have armature photos )

PVC Pipe, .5 inch flange, 18" diameter board, and a shitton of styrofoam, all of which will eventually become a "raver Mad Hatter." That's gonna be fun.

Oh yay, I get to order eyes off the taxidermy site now.

[music |I Came As A Rat - Modest Mouse]

I went to sleep around 1 or so, then woke up at 4:30 and couldn't get back to sleep for the life of me. I went out running around 6:30, and then came back and managed to sleep for an hour before getting up for school. Man, I'm tired. Back in high school, I barely slept 3 hours a night, but I can't manage that anymore. I also slept through three classes a day back then...

I technically don't need to be in class right now, because it's lab and I can do it at home. Our professor is awesome like that, but I came anyway today because I have Novel to Film later, which is bad to miss.

I wish my stomach would stop bothering me all the damn time-

Wonder how much putty this will take )

Thai Tea and Good Times [Apr. 16th, 2008|08:51 pm]

[mood | Deilcious]

So today was Lily's birthday, which I know she told me at one point or another, but seeing as my memory is amazing, both Julia and I were surprised to find out. So after school we went out to Lily's house, and from there went on a serious cake hunt. Which opened up the question of "why are there no bakeries in the Silicon Valley?" seeing we couldn't think of one and come to think of it, I haven't seen one...

We did find cake though. And ice cream.

I attempted to brew some Thai Tea in my coffeemaker, because I don't have a tea strainer with small enough holes. I think that in the future it would probably be a better idea to boil it in a pot and really steep it, then put it through the coffee filter. Or I could go buy a decent tea strainer, but that costs money. It actually came out really good, especially after adding sweetened condensed milk and a bit of honey.

I had a...really interesting day yesterday. Started out good, got really, really shitty, and then got to be really good. Don't really feel like going into details, but I do need to get some putty to fix the hole that was punched in the wall.

Awwwwwww. )
